Near-field signal acquisition for smartglasses using two acoustic vector-sensors

چکیده
Smartglasses, in addition to their visual-output capabilities, often contain acoustic sensors for receiving the user’s voice. However, operation in noisy environments may lead to significant degradation of the received signal. To address this issue, we propose employing an acoustic sensor array which is mounted on the eyeglasses frames. The signals from the array are processed by an algorithm with the purpose of acquiring the desired near-field speech signal produced by the wearer while suppressing noise signals originating from the environment. The array is comprised of two acoustic vectorsensors (AVSs) which are located at the fore of the glasses’ temples. Each AVS consists of four collocated subsensors: one pressure sensor (with an omnidirectional response) and three particle-velocity sensors (with dipole responses) oriented in mutually orthogonal directions. The array configuration is designed to boost the input power of the desired signal, and to ensure that the characteristics of the noise at the different channels are sufficiently diverse (lending towards more effective noise suppression). Since changes in the array’s position correspond to the desired speaker’s movement, the relative source-receiver position remains unchanged; hence, the need to track fluctuations of the steering vector is avoided. Conversely, the spatial statistics of the noise are subject to rapid and abrupt changes due to sudden movement and rotation of the user’s head. Consequently, the algorithm must be capable of rapid adaptation toward such changes. We propose an algorithm which incorporates detection of the desired speech in the time-frequency domain, and employs this information to adaptively update estimates of the noise statistics. The speech detection plays a key role in ensuring the quality of the output signal. We conduct controlled measurements of the array in noisy scenarios. The proposed algorithm preforms favorably with respect to conventional algorithms.

Three Dimensional Localization of an Unknown Target Using Two Heterogeneous Sensors
Heterogeneous wireless sensor networks consist of some different types of sensor nodes deployed in a particular area. Different sensor types can measure different quantity of a source and using the combination of different measurement techniques, the minimum number of necessary sensors is reduced in localization problems. In this paper, we focus on the single source localization in a heterogene...

We consider the passive direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem using arrays of acoustic vector sensors located in a fluid at or near a reflecting boundary. We formulate a general measurement model applicable to any planar surface, derive an expression for the Cramér–Rao bound (CRB) on the azimuth and elevation of a single source, and obtain a bound on the mean-square angular error (MSAE)...

Acoustic vector sensors (AVS), as they were recently developed based upon acoustic particle velocity sensors may improve the performance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) in terms of automatic take off and landing (ATOL), ground surveillance and mid air anti collision. Any sound field can be described by both the scalar value sound pressure and the vector value acoustic particle velocity. Only ...

This paper considers the problem of three-dimensional (3-D, azimuth, elevation and range) localization of a single source in the near-field using a single acoustic vector sensor (AVS). The existing multiple signal classification (MUSIC) or maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) methods which require a 3-D search over the location parameter space are computationally very expensive. This paper advances a new “quasi-blind” calibration algorithm to calibrate a multi-array network (MAN) of acoustic-vector-sensors, whose component-sensors may have non-ideal gain/phase responses, incorrect orientations, and imprecise locations. This proposed calibration is “quasi-blind” in not requiring any prior knowledge/estimation of any training signal’s arrival-angle. This proposed algorit...
